17/03: Transformations with Building-Integrated Photovoltaics

Some Parisian examples of building-integrated photovoltaics on existing buildings.

A 1929 substation of Electricité de France (EDF) converted into an "Industrial Hotel" for start-up companies. Located in the 14th arrondissement, close to the "peripherie" or perimeter of the city of Paris. Building is not a historic monument; it is located within the "abords" or 500 meter radius of other historic monuments, but nothing major is very nearby or co-visible. Renovated building opened in October 2007. Architect: Emmanuel Saadi Architecture. Client: SAGI (Société Anonyme de Gestion Immobilière) Click for a video with the architect.

Modification of facade of 9-story building with addition of photovoltaic panels. Architect: Christophe Dujancourt Client: Siège Social APEC
The two primary facades of the "Hotel Industriel" face south and west. 80% coverage on south facade and 60% on west facing elevation.

Approximately 50,000 solar cells on facades and roof are projected to produce 76,000 kilowatt-hours per year. Actual production on 17 March 2010 as displayed in building entrance lobby.

Reception room on roof gives an idea of how windows feel on interior.

Green roofs and skylight PV's are integrated into the enormous rooftop terrace. Vegetated roofs are also installed over two mechanical rooms. A pixelated view of the adjacent masonry party wall is the inspiration for the pattern of solar cells on the facades and roof.

View across the tramway at the new social headquarters of APEC at the southern peripherie of Paris. The facade-mounted PV's benefit from the wide open space of the tramway and road, something not found often in Paris.

Detail of facade shows how the facade treatment varies between the lower, middle, and upper floors. Note that deciduous street trees will regulate sunlight at the ground floor commercial level.
