06/12: Week 09 - Nobatek
On Saturday, 21 November, Biarritz architect Christophe Nottin introduced me to the engineering and research firm Nobatek, who recently opened their new headquarters building in Anglet, between Biarritz and Bayonne. The building itself is a lesson in sustainable design and Nobatek's engineering and research capabilities helped to refine the design for maximum performance: best solar orientation for thermal and daylight control, air dynamics within open interior, mechanical systems. The building design received a "Haut Qualité Environmental" (HQE) label; this is a rating system similar to the US Green Building Council's LEED program.
Nobatek is fairly new multi-disciplinary research center, created in 2004, and a close collaborator of the Foundation Tecnalia, based in Bilboa, Spain. This summer Nobatek joined forces with EcoCampus at the University of Bordeaux in Talence. Together they are dedicated to developing and applying high performance solutions in sustainable/durable construction. Many thanks to Jacques Tortos, Director, for welcoming us on a Saturday morning.
Architect: Cabinet Arotcharen (Bayonnais architect Patrick Arotcharen). The concept for the building: passive bioclimatic.
