Eleven universities have partnered to create Les Grands Ateliers as a teaching and research facility. The universities include those in architecture, engineering, and art, so it also builds an approach involving collaboration and exchange between disciplines. Les Grands Ateliers also offer continuing education programs for folks like me, professional architects and engineers. The concept is that humans learn better about materials and their properities, as well as thermal and structural behaviors, through hands-on experience. So it is basically a giant shop to play with building materials and learn their capabilities and to discover their unrealized potentials. Les Grands Ateliers website includes a virtual library of the courses and research undertaken there, as well as a live video webcam.

While I was visiting, there were two programs ("formulations") in progress; click on "Read More". Thank you to Bruno Vincent, Les Grands Ateliers, and Pierre Levy, Ecole Nationale Superieure d'Architecture de Lyon, for their time and generous welcome.
